Thank you for this gorgeous book!

The earth is black with last night’s rain—a perfect morning for shadows.”

– Lori M. Lee, Forest of Souls

Book 1 in the Shamanborn Series.

Danger lurks within the roots of Forest of Souls, an epic, unrelenting tale of destiny and sisterhood, perfect for fans of Naomi Novik and Susan Dennard.

Sirscha Ashwyn comes from nothing, but she’s intent on becoming something. After years of training to become the queen’s next royal spy, her plans are derailed when shamans attack and kill her best friend Saengo.

And then Sirscha, somehow, restores Saengo to life.

Unveiled as the first soulguide in living memory, Sirscha is summoned to the domain of the Spider King. For centuries, he has used his influence over the Dead Wood—an ancient forest possessed by souls—to enforce peace between the kingdoms. Now, with the trees growing wild and untamed, only a soulguide can restrain them. As war looms, Sirscha must master her newly awakened abilities before the trees shatter the brittle peace, or worse, claim Saengo, the friend she would die for.

Forest of Souls is an intense, dark, eerie chilling, and suspenseful Ya fantasy novel that immediately drew me in and held my interest right until that shocking and action-filled ending. This book was so entertaining and extremely hard for me to put down. I raced through this one! #myownvoices

Forest of Souls is a mesmerizing dark YA fantasy filled magic inspired by Hmong shamanism. It follows Sirscha, an orphan, leading a meaningless life. Longing for something more, biding her time in the Queens army, accompanied by her best friend Saengo. On a routine journey operation, a fight breaks out between some Shamanborn. Saengo is dealt a mortal blow resulting in his death.

Sirscha takes things into her own hands and does the unthinkable, she accidentally brings her back to life. Not only Saengo is brought back from the dead, but now Sirscha now has the distinct glowing eyes of a Shamanborn.  This comes with a high cost since Shamanborn have been outlawed because of ignorance and fear. Sirscha and Saengo, go deep into the Dead Wood to locate the notorious Shamanborn, the Spider. She must learn to master her elemental powers and help the Spider King control the soul in the creepy Dead Wood. She finds a kindred Spirt with persecuted shamanborn. All the while more sinister forces are at play for Saengo and Sirscha

A dark ominous fantasy with strong themes of friendship and loyalty, along with political intrigue. A stunning path to discovery and acceptance, Sirscha  story coming of age is thought provoking and captivating. Incredible world building along with the friendship makes this book stand out above the rest. The ending was superb with a massive cliffhanger that immediately sets up for the next installment in this stunning series.

“The crush of so many expectations is matched only by the fear of not measuring up. I press my palms to my temples. Fear is not a wall. It is a whip at my back, driving me onward.”
