A world of enchanted injustice needs a disenchanting woman in the newest fantasy series by the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of The Paper Magician.
The orphaned Elsie Camden learned as a girl that there were two kinds of wizards in the world: those who pay for the power to cast spells and those, like her, born with the ability to break them. But as an unlicensed magic user, her gift is a crime. Commissioned by an underground group known as the Cowls, Elsie uses her spellbreaking to push back against the aristocrats and help the common man. She always did love the tale of Robin Hood.
Elite magic user Bacchus Kelsey is one elusive spell away from his mastership when he catches Elsie breaking an enchantment. To protect her secret, Elsie strikes a bargain. She’ll help Bacchus fix unruly spells around his estate if he doesn’t turn her in. Working together, Elsie’s trust in—and fondness for—the handsome stranger grows. So does her trepidation about the rise in the murders of wizards and the theft of the spellbooks their bodies leave behind.
For a rogue spellbreaker like Elsie, there’s so much to learn about her powers, her family, the intriguing Bacchus, and the untold dangers shadowing every step of a journey she’s destined to complete. But will she uncover the mystery before it’s too late to save everything she loves?
This book was received from the Author, and Publisher, in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.
Spellbreaker, Born with the one kind of magic instead of taught a hundred
1885 eleven year old Elsie Camden is living in a workhouse, when a pretty rune appears on one of the walls. Elise touches it and causes a spark that engulfs the workhouse leaving it in cinders. How was she to know it was a firegaurd.
Noticed and rescued , Elsie is recruited by mysterious organization who order her to use her powers to disenchant spells for the good of their cause. She has named them The Cowls. Her only dealing with them are received as assignments through cryptic letters. As an unregistered spellbreaker audacious young twenty year old Elsie is a spellbreaker with a unique ability to undo other magician’s spells. Spells are cleverly knotted together into runes and Elsie has the ability to see them once there are in place. When the unthinkable happens on one of her assignments for the Cowls, she is caught by a powerful wizard Bacchus Kelsey. Bacchus is Barbados born and has travelled to London to be named a master of his craft. This is in titles to receive one spell of his choice as his reward. Once in London he is denied his rightful title and seeks out an opus, which is spellbook magicians leave behind upon their own death.
Holmberg’s magical alternative world Victorian England, is astounding. Innovative world building and incisive character development make this compulsively readable. A fabulous narrative voice the author delivers a compelling, intriguing, and well-written read here. Fantastic characters that totally captivated and fascinated me. The strength of this novel handsdown is the author’s fabulous characterizations.
I was impressed with with unique magical system and I thought it was explained just enough without being overwhelmed. Holmberg does a great job with depicting class, race and gender, along with disabilities. Several pot threads will keep on your toes and sigh of a slow burning romance is perfection. There are several twists when our heroine Elsie, soon discovers that the Cowls are not who she thought they were.
The ending was complete in drawing the reader in, and making you yearn for the next installment in this stunning duolgy.
I am patiently waiting for the next installment, and I highly recommend this charming magical Victorianna.
