SYNOPSIS
As a barrister in 1818 London, William Snopes has witnessed firsthand the danger of only the wealthy having their voices heard, and he’s a strong advocate who defends the poorer classes against the powerful. That changes the day a struggling heiress, Lady Madeleine Jameson, arrives at his door.
In a last-ditch effort to save her faltering estate, Lady Jameson invested in a merchant brig, the Padget. The ship was granted a rare privilege by the king’s regent: a Letter of Marque authorizing the captain to seize the cargo of French traders operating illegally in the Indian Sea. Yet when the Padget returns to London, her crew is met by soldiers ready to take possession of their goods and arrest the captain for piracy. And the Letter—-the sole proof his actions were legal—has mysteriously vanished.
Moved by the lady’s distress, intrigued by the Letter, and goaded by an opposing solicitor, Snopes takes the case. But as he delves deeper into the mystery, he learns that the forces arrayed against Lady Jameson, and now himself, are even more perilous than he’d imagined.

“Just ink and parchment, but with the seal of the English Crown, a source of power for a captain of only thirty-three years to act with the authority of the greatest empire on earth. Such was a Letter of Marque.”
The Barrister and the Letter of Marque is thrilling historical
William Snopes decides to take his future into his own hands, changing the course of his life. His father has disowned him and he has become a well know criminal defence barrister in London for the underprivileged of London.
Lady Madeleine Jameson is seeking a barrister with a reputation of unconventional ways. Her family has invested large some of money in amerchant ship called the Padget. Which was captained by her cousin, Harold Tuttle.
When the shipped docked in London’s harbor with its cargo full of exploits from a French private vessel. The captain is arrested for piracy, and the ships goods are seized before ever making it ashore. All the while the crew is kept guarded still aboard the ship. The captain was given a Letter of Marque… but it’s conveniently missing. This is some shady business not to be taken lightly.
Will Snopes be able to keep captain Tuttle from the gallows? When those higher up to the monarchy try everything in their power to have the captain convicted. Snopes and Lady Madeleine, along with an intriguing cast of characters will join forces in this intense mystery.
A wonderful meticulously layered storyline, with an intelligent complex plot. This book, is one that grips you from the start and holds your attention completely all the way until the satisfying end. The fully development characters are reminiscent to Dickinson ones, and come to life under the author seamless narration. The atmospheric imagery are wonderful as the author cleverly guides the reader in this legal maneuvering fast paced read. There is also a little romance that is perfectly depicted and not overly done.

In this historical legal thrillers, I could easily find myself at The Red Hound Pub. Having a pint of Guinness or maybe two. I do so enjoy drinking a pint of Guinness from time to time myself. While there you might overhear William Snopes, Solicitor Mandy Bristol, Edmund Shaw, as they plan their strategic plan of action.Edmund Shaw
