SUMMARY

A centuries-long peace is shattered in a matriarchal society when a decade passes without a single girl being born in this sweeping epic fantasy that’s perfect for fans of Robin Hobb and Circe.

Five hundred years of peace between queendoms shatters when girls inexplicably stop being born. As the Drought of Girls stretches across a generation, it sets off a cascade of political and personal consequences across all five queendoms of the known world, throwing long-standing alliances into disarray as each queendom begins to turn on each other—and new threats to each nation rise from within.

Uniting the stories of women from across the queendoms, this propulsive, gripping epic fantasy follows a warrior queen who must rise from childbirth bed to fight for her life and her throne, a healer in hiding desperate to protect the secret of her daughter’s explosive power, a queen whose desperation to retain control leads her to risk using the darkest magic, a near-immortal sorcerer demigod powerful enough to remake the world for her own ends—and the generation of lastborn girls, the ones born just before the Drought, who must bear the hopes and traditions of their nations if the queendoms are to survive.

REVIEW

This book was received from the Author, and Publisher, in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

This is a non spoiler review, because you as reader need to read this book. Also, I feel sometimes I have in the past gave away to much of the plot line. This has diminished the pleasure for would be readers.

G. R. Macallister, Newest release is an intoxicating fantasy on epic proportions!

Scorpica, is the first installment in a stunning series of a matriarchal fantasy world, by the very talented author G.R Macllister.

A dramatic world of Five Queendoms, is slowly coming apart at the seams, as a drought in which no girl children have been born in decades. Causing complete chaos, with the Queendoms, as political intrigue and strife set in. Trust is shattered and alliances are broken, as fear sets into world. Everyday life that everyone has come to know is slowly coming apart by threads. Political turmoil is rising and the peace that was once known is no more.

A world where women dominate everything from political offices to warriors. This once peaceful world is split into five Queendoms. Each one is noted for its own particular strengths. They are Arca for its magic, and desert landscape. Sestia for it’s grain and sheep, Paxim for its trading negotiating. Scorpio for its warrior queen, and powerful women warriors. Bastian for its scholars and record keeping abilities.

The story starts off in an intentionally slow, an ambiguous way, as the author sets the perfect tone. She gives the reader wonderful backstories, carefully reveling a little of the characters history, and glimpses of their future. This fully immersives the reader into an incredible world the author has stunningly built.

A vast cast of characters with multiple perspectives, makes it a bold epic fantasy. A rich and rewarding reading experience. I especially enjoyed that the protagonist were mothers. Even though the book has its dark moments, it also is a book about friendship, families, happiness and hope. G.R. did a fabulous job in creating a wide range of female characters, all raw and realistic. There are no male POV’s characters, and also there are no male minor characters.

One thing that really stood out for me as a reader was, the incredible birth scene that rolled into a fight for the death. Also I want to note, that The Five Queendoms: Scorpica, also has some great depicted queer representation.

Even though the book is hefty, it has a fast paced plot, taking the reader from start to finish with its ending perfectly setting up for the next installment. Key components and foreshadowing are prevalent, so pay attention readers for dropped clues. G. R. Macallister masterfully sets character conflicts with plot twists. The Innovative world building, with strong ambitious characters, and villains you will love to hate. There are certain fantasy books that stand out above the rest. Either by there world building or characterization, this one exceeds at balancing both.

Scorpica, is a riveting and intensely addictive book, which made for a standout five star read for me. I highly recommend this book for fantasy lovers, and I impatiently waiting on the next book.

Happy Reading
