Judy I. Lin’s sweeping debut A Magic Steeped in Poison, first in a duology, is sure to enchant fans of Adrienne Young and Leigh Bardugo.

I used to look at my hands with pride. Now all I can think is, “These are the hands that buried my mother.”

For Ning, the only thing worse than losing her mother is knowing that it’s her own fault. She was the one who unknowingly brewed the poison tea that killed her—the poison tea that now threatens to also take her sister, Shu.

When Ning hears of a competition to find the kingdom’s greatest shennong-shi—masters of the ancient and magical art of tea-making—she travels to the imperial city to compete. The winner will receive a favor from the princess, which may be Ning’s only chance to save her sister’s life.

But between the backstabbing competitors, bloody court politics, and a mysterious (and handsome) boy with a shocking secret, Ning might actually be the one in more danger.

This book was received from the Author, and Publisher, in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

This is a non spoiler review, because you as reader need to read this book. Also, I feel sometimes I have in the past gave away to much of the plot line. This has diminished the pleasure for would be readers.

A massive thank you to @tbrbeyondtours & @judyilinauthor for giving me this stunning ARC

A Magic Steeped in Poison is the first book in The Book of Tea duology.

Stunning fantasy infused by Magic, Chinese and Taiwanese folklore and traditions.

We follow Ning a shennong-tu, one who has not completed her training to her mother. When a devastating turn of events happens, she mistakenly takes her mother’s life when she brews a poison tea, a tea that now is also slowly killing her sister, Shu. Living a shelter life, far way from the imperial court drama, she must leave home and navigate through deadly court intrigue. If she wins the competition, she will be able to ask for one favor, one that could save the life of her beloved sister. She also intends to give retributive justice to whoever is responsible for poisoning and distributing the tea that she poured from her own hands that left her motherless and caused her sister sickness.

A spellbinding, YA fantasy book, that checked all my boxes. Stunning detailed writing along with Judy I. Lin’s lyrical flowing pros. An Ingenious magical system, where magic is related to the art of tea-brewing. The characters are well developed and I found Ning to be brave, compassionate, sometimes a little impulsive, which makes her even more likable. The romance was enjoyable, but didn’t overshadow the storyline. The twists I didn’t see coming, so many mysteries to unravel, this alone will have my fellow fantasy readers flipping the pages at lightning speed. Deadly shifting alliances, along with an inventive twist on the royal competition plot line.

The perfect cliffhanger ending sets up for the next installment coming in August.

Be prepared for the enthralling conclusion to Judy I. Lin’s Book of Tea duology— A Venom Dark and Sweet
